Abstract

Milo is a nighttime delivery system for city center businesses.

It uses public transportation for urban transport and automated delivery vehicles for the last mile at night. This reduces costs, boosts efficiency, and allows users to choose delivery dates flexibly. Goods are waiting at the store entrance every morning when users arrive for work.

Specificities

“Let goods wait for you” help users maximize human resource efficiency. More frequent deliveries decrease the amount per delivery, letting users minimize storage space.

MILO is 60% faster and costs 50% less than traditional supply chains. Recyclable Milo-BOXes replace cardboard packaging, reducing resource consumption even more.

Relevance

Two contrasting trends have been identified. Firstly, businesses in city centres have an increasing demand for logistics services. Secondly, trucks are finding it increasingly difficult to enter city centres. This leads to higher delivery prices, along with a decrease in the frequency, speed, and punctuality of deliveries. This contradiction results in businesses facing additional costs. For example, they struggle to prepare sufficient manpower to handle a large volume of goods that may arrive at unpredictable times, and they also need to set up a large warehouse in the congested city centre. Milo provides a solution to this problem.

Target Audience
  1. Small retail stores

  2. Small grocery stores

  3. Gastronomy

  4. Small and medium chains without own logistics system

Milo Supply Chain

The MILO supply chain is primarily responsible for local transportation and delivery, while long-distance transportation is done in collaboration with other logistics companies.

MILO's Vission is to deliver goods to the store doorstep quickly, flexibly, and at a low cost in the early morning, awaiting customer arrival.

To achieve this goal, MILO has made improvements mainly from three perspectives:

Part 1.

Part 1.

Logistics Hub: HUBcenter and HUBmobil

Improved speed, delivery frequency, and punctuality

Logistics Hub:

HUBcenter and HUBmobil

Improved speed, delivery frequency, and punctuality

HUBcenter
Goods Sorting and Temporary Storage

Each city's outskirts have a HUBcenter, allowing trucks to unload without entering the city center, enabling them to quickly proceed to another city.

HUBmobil
Goods Loading and Recovery

During the night, the HUBmobil, carrying clusters of goods, appears near the customer's nearest bus stop to prepare for further distribution and retrieval work. The maximum cargo capacity of the HUBmobil is 8m³.

Once the goods reach the HUBcenter, they can be delivered to the store's doorstep before 6 a.m. the next day. Users also have the option to temporarily store some goods in the HUB and define their own delivery dates and frequencies.
Milo operates at twice the speed of traditional supply chains.

Urban Transport and Delivery: Public Transit and BOXcourier

Avoiding congestion, reducing transportation costs

Urban Transport and Delivery:

Public Transit and BOXcourier

Avoiding congestion, reducing transportation costs

Public Transit
HUBmobil Towing

Using a regular bus as an example, it can provide 4-6 tons of surplus capacity. After the evening peak hours (22:00-24:00), the bus will tow the HUBmobil along its bus route to a specific bus stop in the city center. Then, before the morning peak hours (05:00-06:30), it will tow them back.

BOXcourier
Last-Mile Delivery

Each HUBmobil will carry two Automated Courier Vehicles: BOXcourier. They will distribute goods to the magnetic lock area of customer stores between 00:00 and 05:00.

BOXcourier is capable of adapting to various road conditions within the city. It travels along preset paths and uses machine learning to respond to unforeseen circumstances.

As HUBmobil itself lacks propulsion, after separating from the bus, it can be parked at open spaces along the roadside by being towed by the two internal BOXcouriers.

Transportation costs and labor costs have both been reduced, and nighttime transportation and distribution also avoid congestion.

Mini Warehous-Parcel: BOX

Ensuring security, flexibility, and sustainability

BOX
Mini Warehous-Parcel

The Milo supply chain utilizes high-strength, recyclable BOXES to replace cardboard packaging. Boxes of different sizes can be interlocked, forming clusters of up to one cubic meter in size.

The BOX is equipped with a magnetic lock on top, allowing it to be secured to the magnetic lock area near the store, ensuring security before the customer arrives. After the customer retrieves the goods, the BOX will be reclaimed. In essence, the BOX serves as a secure, super-mini warehouse.

The BOX can also be equipped with different functional liners based on specific needs, such as anti-theft, insulation, shock resistance, etc.

Use Case

Milo enables sole proprietor Lisa to enjoy transportation services at a lower cost (60% of similar services). "Let the goods wait for you" saves her a significant amount of labor costs, as she only needs to schedule an employee for goods storage and organization at 8 a.m., instead of waiting all day for the arrival of packages.

Milo also enables users to achieve faster supply speeds. Becoming a Milo's Abo user allows a chain store manager like Hans to quickly replenish and return stock in response to market changes, benefiting from the temporary warehousing services of HUBcenter. The BOX with additional refrigerated liners also reduces the loss rate and costs of transporting goods during the summer.
